Hike Terceira Baia da Agualva PRC2TER 16 August 2011

16 August we took the 10.30hrs Nr 3 bus towards Biscoitos and got off at the intersection of the old Canada da Algoa road, the start of the well marked Baia da Agualva PRC2TER hike.
The trail led us down a rough farm track between the fields towards the coast
After a while we descended into a ravine cut by a small stream

Wild strawberries
and Hedychium gardnerianum - Kahili the Ginger Lily lined the route
Past soft rock faces in which it looked as though birds had made their nests
eventually arriving at the Faja (a small area of flat fertile land at the bottom of a seaside cliff that was formed by lava flows , landslides and collapsed cliffs - we have seen several examples of Fajas on the neighbouring island of Sao Jorge.)
Crossing the Faja to the cliffs on the other side

A good place for lunch on the boulders under the overhanging basalt cliffs
A viewpoint looking over the Faja
To the right of the picture is the ravine down which we had walked to reach the Faja
Basalt clifs

The weather started to deteriorate, a band of rain could be seen rapidly approaching from the sea - so we jumped over the wall and headed for this shelter
Sheltering from the rain
More cliffs

The trail brought us up the Canada das Baleeiras back to the main road where we caught the Nr 3 bus which leaves Biscoitos around 1500 hrs back to Praia

Groetjes L&G
